The Issue

Every day, I am bombarded with spam calls and text messages. From morning to night, my phone buzzes incessantly with unsolicited and often duplicated messages or voice calls that only serve to disturb my peace. Yesterday alone, I was plagued by four such spam messages, each from a different number yet with the same annoying content. My frustration is echoed by countless others who face similar disruptions in their daily lives. Some are so overwhelmed that they resort to paying their phone company to change their phone numbers, only to find the respite temporary. So not only costing time but money. But only only can it be frustrating but it can also lead to identity thief. With the rise in AI these calls and texts are getting more sophisticated, convincing. It is important to protect everyone but especially seniors who are more trusting of these spam attempts.

The rampant nature of these spam calls and texts is not just a nuisance; it's a widespread epidemic. According to reports, consumers in the United States received over 50 billion spam calls and texts last year, with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) flagging the issue as one of the top consumer complaints. Existing regulations and measures to control these persistent disturbances remain inadequate. The current Telephone Consumer Protection Act, while well-intentioned, is not keeping pace with the technology that enables spammers to reach us.

We need strong, enforceable Federal or State laws that deter and penalize these relentless spam attacks. This means implementing stricter penalties for service providers that allow such calls and messages to persist unchecked. It also necessitates technological enhancements, like better caller identification verification and real-time blocking mechanisms.

Additionally, raising public awareness on how to protect personal data and report spam effectively will empower us all to fight back. By taking decisive action and standing united, we can reclaim our phones—and our quiet.

Join me in demanding stronger legislation and enforcement to protect every citizen from unsolicited spam calls and texts.
