Enforce strict safety standards for Sri Lankan daycares

The issue

As a father of a child of a similar age, the loss of a young life due to inadequate safety measures in daycares is a nightmare that haunts me deeply. Recently, a heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded when a two-year-old child wandered through an unsecured fence at a daycare and fell into a pond. The child was heard screaming, but was only found lifeless about 20 minutes later. This devastating incident brings to light a critical and urgent need for enforcing strict national safety standards in all daycares across Sri Lanka to ensure the safety and well-being of our children.

No parent should ever have to endure the pain of losing a child due to preventable safety lapses. Had there been proper safety protocols, adequate supervision, and appropriately trained staff, this tragedy could have been averted. Children are our most precious resources, and their safety should be a top priority for all daycare facilities.

Currently, there is a severe lack of standardized safety measures across daycare centers in Sri Lanka. This gap not only puts children at risk but also causes immense anxiety among parents who rely on daycare services while juggling their work commitments. It is essential for the government to take decisive action to address this issue immediately.

By introducing and enforcing strict national safety standards, we can ensure every daycare facility adheres to a baseline of safety measures. This includes secure fencing around play areas, adequate supervision, emergency response protocols, and ensuring all staff are properly trained in child safety and emergency procedures. Additionally, regular inspections and assessments should be conducted to ensure these standards are consistently met.

We urge the Sri Lankan government to prioritize this pressing issue by legislating and enforcing safety standards that protect our children. Every day that passes without action is another day a child’s life is unnecessarily at risk.

Sign this petition to demand the implementation of strict national safety standards in all daycares across Sri Lanka. Together, we can advocate for a safer and more secure environment for our children.
