On October 28, 2023, my world was shattered. My son, Michael, a vibrant 22-year-old with his whole life ahead of him, was thrown from the back of a moving truck and tragically killed by another vehicle on the interstate. This incident occurred in Ware Shoals, SC but could happen anywhere where such dangerous practices are allowed.

Michael's death is not an isolated incident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), hundreds of people die each year as a result of riding unrestrained in the back of pickup trucks. These deaths are preventable if we enforce stricter laws against this dangerous practice.

I am advocating for "Michael's Law", which would prohibit passengers from riding in the back of pickup trucks unless they are properly restrained and protected. This law is not just about protecting our loved ones; it's about preventing future tragedies like what happened to my son.

We cannot bring Michael back but we can honor his memory by ensuring that no other family has to endure such pain and loss due to lax regulations around passenger safety in trucks.
