The Issue

Bribery is a disease that eats away at the core of society, corrupting not only the individuals involved but also the very institutions meant to serve the public good. I have witnessed firsthand how this insidious practice undermines progress, erodes trust, and creates a culture of dishonesty that extends to every corner of our nation.

In India, bribery has become a systemic issue that affects all levels of organizations, from government bodies to non-governmental organizations, and even nonprofit entities. Officials and employees who should be working for the betterment of the country and its people are often found extending favors in exchange for illicit monetary gains. This not only hinders effective governance and equitable development but also deprives citizens of the services and rights they deserve.

For too long, bribery has been dismissed as a norm, a compromise accepted in various sectors, and an inconvenience tolerated by many. However, the impact of this acceptance is far more dangerous than some might comprehend; it weakens the fabric of our society and stunts the potential of millions of Indians.

I propose we elevate bribery to the level of high treason in our legal system. By defining bribery as an act of high treason, we send a clear message that this form of corruption is a betrayal not just of ethical standards, but of national integrity. This reclassification should apply broadly, encompassing any bribe given or received by any entity, individual, organization, or nonprofit.

By enforcing stricter penalties and treating bribery with the gravity it deserves, we can begin to forge a path towards transparency, accountability, and genuine progress. We can create an environment where citizens, officials, and organizations operate under a standard of fairness and integrity. This bold step could inspire other nations in their fight against corruption as well.

I urge lawmakers, leaders, and citizens to take a stand for the future of our nation. Let us create and implement laws that treat bribery as the serious crime it is, and push for judicial reforms that make accountability a central tenet of our governance.

Sign this petition to demand action against the pervasive and damaging practice of bribery. Together, we can build a stronger, more honest India for ourselves and future generations.
