Our dedicated crossing guard, who ensures the safe passage of children to the bus stop, has narrowly escaped being run over multiple times. As parents, we live in constant fear every time we cross the street with our kids, fearing for their safety because of speeding drivers who treat the road as a racetrack. Many community members also struggle to access the post office due to these issues.
The current state of Jordan Street poses a severe hazard to not only pedestrians but also to the children and families that cross it daily. This road is often used as a main commute route, encouraging drivers to exceed safe speeds, without enforcement of the consequences and poses the potential for tragedy.
We are calling upon local and state governments to take immediate action to safeguard our community. The implementation of speed bumps could serve as an effective deterrent to speeding, forcing drivers to slow down and be more observant of those crossing the road. Alternatively, the installation of traffic lights or new, highly visible crosswalk signs would ensure that drivers are alerted to the presence of pedestrians, giving them the necessary visual cues to slow down and grant the right of way.
