Morris Bridge Road has become increasingly utilized as the population grows rapidly in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel. The two lane road has become the main source of travel for nearly 14 miles of residential & commercial traffic, most notably from SR 54 to I-75. As rapid new home development has expanded north of what ended, for many years, at Easton Park in New Tampa, the traffic on Morris Bridge Rd has exponentially swelled and has become alarmingly dangerous. For longtime residents of New Tampa, the contrast from even just one year ago is stark. What used to be a regularly but safely used roadway has become a speedway, with cars darting into oncoming traffic lanes in order to dangerously pass other vehicles traveling safely within the speed limit. The average rate of speed on Morris Bridge Rd. appears to have become close to 60 miles per hour, and even still, reckless drivers will swerve into the opposite lane on this two lane road to get around other fast-moving vehicles. Whatsmore, the roadway on Morris Bridge, especially between Cross Creek Blvd & I75, has multiple turns & bends that require vehicle caution and reduced speed. Sadly, the mindless drivers who engage in risky activity do not appear to take note of the elevated danger that can occur when passing into an oncoming lane with no visibility of what- or who - is just around the bend. Over the short course of 2022, there have been a notable number of accidents on this road, including fatalities of innocent drivers, due to these dangerous circumstances. We would like to see the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners & local law enforcement step up swiftly to begin ensuring no more families are hurt or tragically killed by unsafe motorists while traveling on this road. Bear in mind, this road is also used by bicyclists as it is adjacent to Flatwoods Park. Initially, installing multiple speed traps will be the most effective & timely way to BEGIN decreasing the issues at hand. Just this morning on Morris Bridge, I noticed roadway signs mulled down & nearby tire marks in the adjacent grass. On my commute home, I drove past an overturned SUV & narrowly missed another unrelated accident backup, as Morris Bridge northbound traffic came to a crawl near Cross Creek Blvd. My community also lost a neighbor in a fatal accident last month on this road, due to an unsafe driver. Enough is enough. It is time to implement & enforce safety standards on Morris Bridge Road effective immediately.
