Enforce Provision of Sensory Kits in Movie Theaters

The Issue

As a person on the autism spectrum, I consider movie theaters a challenge rather than a joy, transforming what should be a relaxing experience into an overwhelming one. I believe that the introduction of sensory kits – containing fidget toys, headphones, or dimmable glasses – could change this.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This means that a significant number of people could potentially face similar challenges in movie theaters without necessary accommodations. Providing sensory kits would enable all people, regardless of sensory needs, to enjoy movies comfortably.

Some theaters have started offering similar measures with great success, but this needs to become commonplace. Accommodations like these should not set us apart, but rather, bring us together in shared experiences in movie-going. A compulsory implementation of sensory kits in cinemas could lead to a more inclusive experience, no matter the sensory sensitivity.

Let us turn every movie theater into an inclusive scene: sign this petition and join the effort. Cinema is for everyone.
