Enforce Open Space Rules in Walnut Creek and Limit Mountain Bike Usage to Legal trails

Enforce Open Space Rules in Walnut Creek and Limit Mountain Bike Usage to Legal trails
The Issue
Walks and hikes in Walnut Creek’s Open Spaces have always been a source of solace, an experience of nature, and a moment of exercise. However, lately, they have become increasingly unsafe due to mountain bikers not adhering to the approved trail rules. They ride off of the designated multi-use trails creating new and hazardous paths. They regularly ride on trails designated for hikers only.
A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health pointed out that encounters between bikers and pedestrians can lead to higher rates of accidents ("Fear of Crime in Urban Parks," 2019). In a place like our Open Space, designed for communal and serene enjoyment, the irresponsible behaviors of a few are putting the safety and peace of all at risk.
This petition calls for the city of Walnut Creek to strictly enforce Open Space rules, especially the rule that restricts mountain biking to approved multi-use trails. It's about upholding the quality of our experiences, keeping safe the hikers and walkers, and preserving the natural surroundings in the area we all love. We have the right to our walks and communion with nature, free from worry and harm.
The enforcement of these rules is not just for our safety. It's about the preservation of our urban parks, natural spaces, and antithesis of modern, fast-paced life stressors. Sign this petition to urge the City of Walnut Creek to take immediate action and enforce the rules within our cherished Open Space.
Please also take the time to comment and share problematic encounters you have had with bikers who are not following the rules. These comments will be shared with the city of Walnut Creek. This will help to clarify the size and scope of the problem.
