According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 adults live with a mental illness. Although not all individuals with mental health issues pose a danger, it’s crucial that we take preventative measures to ensure that only those who are mentally sound have access to firearms. The Gun Violence Archive reports that there have been over 44,000 incidents of gun violence across the country this year alone. It's time to address the root causes of this crisis.
We propose the implementation of mandatory mental health evaluations for anyone seeking to own or purchase a gun. This should be a comprehensive evaluation conducted by licensed professionals, ensuring that all potential gun owners are assessed for their mental fitness. This step will not only help in reducing the risk of tragic incidents but also encourage a dialogue around mental health that is desperately needed in our society.
Other countries, like Japan and the United Kingdom, have stringent measures concerning mental health and firearm ownership, resulting in significantly lower rates of gun violence. Adopting similar practices in the U.S. could dramatically reduce the number of incidents, saving countless lives.
