Enforce Mandatory Health Screenings for ICE Detainees
The Issue
Lianyong Wei walked into an immigration detention facility in Saipan on Aug. 22, taken into custody without incident. By the next morning, a corrections officer found him unresponsive during a routine check. He was pronounced dead less than 24 hours after intake.
Federal regulations say immigrant detainees are entitled to a health and medical screening no later than 12 hours after they arrive. Asked whether Wei received one, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wouldn't say. Instead, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offered only a general statement: "Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay," according to ICE.
That line doesn't answer the question, and it shouldn't have to come to this. Wei is the 57th person to die in immigration detention since this administration began, with two dozen of those deaths recorded since January alone. A screening rule that exists on paper but can't be confirmed in practice isn't protecting anyone.
Every person taken into government custody deserves to know the medical check required by law actually happens, not just get promised in a statement after they're already gone. DHS and ICE need to prove their intake screening rule is real: publish screening records tied to every detention death, and commit to independent verification of medical intake at every facility.
Sign this petition to demand DHS confirm every ICE detainee actually receives the health screening they are owed, before another name is added to this list.
