Enforce Mandatory 30-Minute Meal Breaks for RNs Nationwide

The Issue

As a group of nursing students from the University of Virginia preparing to step into the role of Registered Nurses, we have witnessed the realities of nursing life during our clinical rotations. It's not uncommon for the nurses we shadow, dedicated professionals committed to their patients' welfare, to go an entire shift without a proper meal break. At best, they snatch a hurried bite at the nurses' station while still attending to their charting responsibilities.

Such conditions contribute to burnout, fatigue, and compromised patient care, ultimately leading to a decline in the quality of healthcare services. Currently, the policies around meal breaks for nurses are inconsistent across healthcare facilities, largely due to a lack of clear laws at state and federal levels. This neglect to formalize and enforce proper meal break policy for nurses is a serious concern that needs immediate attention.

The solution is simple and straightforward: to implement a federal or state-mandated policy requiring all Registered Nurses to be given a 30-minute uninterrupted meal break during their shifts. Nurses, like any other professionals, deserve a designated break time, not only for their own well-being but also as a necessity for effective patient care.

By signing this petition, we urge lawmakers to introduce legislation that uniformly mandates 30-minute meal breaks for nurses nationwide. Every signature brings us a step closer to improving working conditions for nurses and the quality of care they provide. Please sign our petition today.
