In the West Midlands, UK, we are witnessing a disturbing increase in cases of animal cruelty. Despite existing laws, offenders often receive light sentences and are allowed to own animals again after serving their time. This is unacceptable and needs to change. According to RSPCA statistics, there were 1,678 convictions for animal cruelty in England and Wales in 2019 alone (RSPCA). We believe that anyone convicted of such heinous acts should face a lifetime ban on owning animals.

We call on our local authorities and lawmakers to revise current legislation. The punishment for animal cruelty should be severe enough to deter potential offenders - not just a few years' imprisonment but lifetime bans from owning any animals. This will ensure that those who have harmed animals cannot do so again. As this is breaking the animal welfare act 2006.

The lives of our beloved pets and wildlife are at stake here; they deserve better protection under the law. It's time we take a stand against animal cruelty once and for all.
