Enforce Life Vest Requirement at Centennial Beach's Deep End

Enforce Life Vest Requirement at Centennial Beach's Deep End
The Issue
My heart is heavy following the recent tragedy at Centennial Beach. My thoughts and prayers are with the family affected during this unimaginable time. While I cannot speak for them, I hope this petition is received as a compassionate call to action rooted in care for our community and a desire to help prevent future heartbreak.
Centennial Beach is a treasured part of Naperville, and our lifeguards work incredibly hard to keep it safe. This petition is not a reflection on their dedication or professionalism but rather, it’s about adding an additional layer of protection in a setting where visibility is limited and emergencies can unfold in seconds.
At Centennial Beach in Naperville, the deep end poses a significant risk due to its dark, murky waters, which make it difficult to spot swimmers in distress. As a concerned member of this community, I believe we must act now to prevent future incidents by requiring life vests in the deep end.
Life vests provide a critical layer of safety that could help save lives. Requiring their use in the deep end is a low cost, high impact measure that can greatly reduce the risk of drowning and give families peace of mind while enjoying a day at the beach.
Life vests should not be left as a personal choice in the deep end—especially for teens. Adolescents may feel self-conscious or embarrassed to wear one if it’s optional, even if they aren’t strong swimmers. When safety equipment becomes a requirement, it removes the stigma and puts everyone on the same playing field. No one has to worry about being singled out. This small change could empower more teens to stay safe without fear of judgment, and ultimately, it could save lives.
Let’s work together to ensure Centennial Beach is a safe place for everyone. Please join me in asking city leaders and beach management to prioritize safety and implement this important change.
This petition is shared with the utmost respect for those grieving. It is motivated only by love for our community and a desire to prevent future tragedies.
