The Issue

For years, delivery workers have pedaled through New York City in the rain, the heat, and the worst of the pandemic to bring food to people who could not leave home. Many are immigrants riding e-bikes and mopeds, earning hourly pay that depends on confusing algorithms most riders never get to see.

New York City just proved that delivery apps can be held to account. City investigators found that DoorDash shortchanged 264,000 delivery workers, underpaying some and paying others nothing at all. DoorDash has agreed to pay $131.5 million, including $115 million in worker relief, and the city will monitor its pay data for the next three years to make sure it follows the law.

That is real progress for one company. But DoorDash is not the only app running delivery workers through an opaque pay system. Uber Eats, Grubhub, and other platforms use similar formulas to calculate hourly pay, and nothing yet forces them to open their books the way DoorDash now must.

"This sends a strong message that we are in a new era of enforcement in New York," said Samuel Levine, commissioner of the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection and the New York City Council should extend that same standard to every delivery app in the city, not just the one that got caught. Delivery workers kept this city fed through its hardest years. They should not have to wait years and file complaints to get paid what they are owed.

Sign the petition to demand the city hold every delivery app to the same pay standards it just forced on DoorDash, before more workers are shortchanged.
