Enforce driving laws in West Hartford
The Issue
The streets of West Hartford, particularly around Blue Back Square, have become increasingly unsafe for pedestrians. I experienced a frightening incident right outside the Delmar Hotel—while crossing the street, a car entered the crosswalk at an alarming speed, brushing against my thigh. It was a moment that left me shaken and fearful for my safety, a stark reminder of the vulnerability pedestrians face every day.
Unfortunately, my experience is far from an isolated case. Numerous reports indicate that drivers frequently disregard the white lines of crosswalks, often with little concern for the pedestrians who rely on these walkways for safe passage. Cars routinely stop across these lines, blocking pathways and sometimes perilously ignoring the activated crosswalk signals.
This troubling reality demands immediate action. We need a comprehensive plan to enhance pedestrian safety in West Hartford. This could include increasing the presence of traffic enforcement officers in hotspots like Blue Back Square, implementing clear signage and visible warnings for drivers approaching crosswalks, and installing more flashing lights at all crosswalks to alert drivers to pedestrians.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,205 pedestrian fatalities in the US in 2019 alone. An alarming portion of these fatal incidents occurs in urban areas, precisely where people should feel safest walking their neighbourhoods. We cannot afford to wait until a tragedy occurs in West Hartford. The safety of pedestrians needs to be a top priority.
In many communities, intensified enforcement of existing traffic laws has successfully reduced dangerous driving behaviours. It is time for West Hartford to follow suit by ensuring our roads are safe for everyone. Whether through stricter penalties for drivers violating crosswalk rules or community awareness campaigns, there are actionable steps that can be taken to protect residents.
Your support is crucial in making our town a safer place. By signing this petition, you’ll be joining a community push to enforce driving laws more rigorously in West Hartford, safeguarding our streets for pedestrians and motorists alike.
