A beloved family member, my cherished dog Maddie, was tragically killed during a walk in our own neighborhood when a pack of loose pit bulls attacked without warning. My other dog Lucy, suffered severe injuries in the same brutal incident. These heart-wrenching events underscored a pressing issue that puts everyone in Lakehaven in potential danger.

Despite existing leash laws meant to protect residents and their pets, numerous dog attacks and frightening encounters with unleashed dogs occur regularly in our community. This continuing lack of enforcement from our Homeowners' Association (HOA) leaves many feeling unsafe in a place that should feel like home. Families are hesitant to enjoy outdoor activities, and parents worry for their children's safety on their own streets.

The need for the HOA to step up and rigorously enforce the leash laws is now more important than ever. Concrete actions must be taken against those who defy these essential regulations, such as imposing fines or other penalties on non-compliant pet owners. Not only will this push for accountability and responsible pet ownership, but it will also reinforce trust in our community's ability to self-govern effectively.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, over 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs annually in the United States, stressing the widespread nature of this issue beyond just our town. Proper leash enforcement can significantly decrease these types of incidents by preventing dogs from running loose and approaching people or other animals unexpectedly.

We urge the HOA to uphold Lakehaven’s promise of being a secure and welcoming environment by taking immediate action to ensure all dog owners comply with leash laws. It's essential for the safety and peace of mind of every resident.
