Enforce clear labelling of halal meat in the UK

The Issue

I recently discovered that I might have unknowingly consumed halal meat. This realization is unsettling for me given my strong beliefs about animal welfare. I am deeply concerned about what I believe to be the barbaric nature of halal slaughter, where animals are often not stunned before being killed, resulting in what I view as unnecessary suffering.

Consumers in the UK currently face difficulty in making informed decisions regarding whether the meat they purchase aligns with their ethical beliefs, as there is insufficient regulation requiring explicit labelling of halal meat. This lack of transparency goes against the principles of informed consumer choice and animal welfare.

In many supermarkets and food outlets, halal meat is not clearly distinguished from non-halal meat, leaving individuals like me without a choice. According to the Food Standards Agency's report, an increasing amount of meat in the UK is being produced in compliance with religious slaughter practices, yet the existing labelling standards do not adequately reflect these processes.

Clear and consistent labelling will allow consumers to make ethical purchasing decisions that align with their personal values. Not only will it help those of us who wish to avoid halal meat, but it will also better serve those who specifically look for it due to religious reasons.

I urge the UK government and the Food Standards Agency to implement strict regulations mandating clear and explicit labelling of halal meat. Such regulations will ensure transparency in our food supply chain and uphold the rights of every consumer to make choices based on their ethical and religious beliefs.

Please sign this petition to demand the clear labelling of halal meat in the UK, ensuring honest choices for all consumers.
