The Issue

Living in Cambridge, Ontario, we understand that fireworks are fun and all that, especially one or two weekend nights a year.  However, there's a crucial aspect of community living that involves respecting each other’s need for peace and quiet, especially numerous nights in a row, and even more so, after 11:00pm.

For many residents, including those who work early in the mornings, sleep is essential. The loud noise created by fireworks can be disruptive, turning restful nights into sleepless ones. Moreover, the unexpected nature of these celebratory explosions severely frightens pets and wildlife, causing unnecessary anxiety and distress.

While it is important to recognize and respect religious and cultural celebrations, it is equally important that these celebrations adhere to the city’s rules designed to protect the peace of our community. Cambridge has set a clear ban on fireworks after 11:00pm for a reason, and it reflects a balance between celebration and respect for your neighbours.

The current lenient enforcement of this rule during celebrations like Diwali undermines its effectiveness. It inadvertently sends a message that some can disregard communal rules at the expense of others' quality of life.

We call upon Cambridge officials to enforce the 11:00pm fireworks ban strictly, with no exceptions. By doing so, the city will reaffirm its commitment to the well-being of ALL of its residents, ensuring everyone gets the rest they deserve and that both human and animal inhabitants can coexist harmoniously.

We urge all residents to sign this petition. Let’s make our voices heard and ensure that Cambridge remains a respectful and peaceful place for everyone during each and every celebration.
