Enforce Camarillo's Lawn-Noise Law for a Quieter Community
The Issue
Living in Camarillo is a joy, where families thrive and community spirit is palpable. But lately, my friends, family, and neighbors have expressed their frustration with the rampant noise pollution from gas-powered leaf blowers. My own landscaper, an early adopter of electric equipment, is losing business because others continue to operate above the legal noise limits without consequences. This isn't just about my personal grief over disrupted peace; it's a matter of fairness for businesses who comply with the law, and the right to tranquility for all residents.
Camarillo prides itself on its 55 dB daytime noise limit as stipulated in the Municipal Code § 10.34, designed to maintain a peaceful environment for everyone. However, this regulation is frequently ignored, especially by those using gas leaf blowers generating 75–80 dB—significantly exceeding the legal limit and producing triple the permitted sound energy.
The failure to enforce this law is not just an oversight; it's a direct blow to health and well-being. Excessive noise disrupts the peace of our streets, affecting children, seniors, and remote workers. This should not be the price of allowing certain landscapers to cut corners at the expense of those who adhere to the law.
Additionally, our local businesses suffer due to these enforcement lapses. Landscapers who have invested heavily in electric equipment, complying with the noise regulations, are losing out on contracts because of this unfair playing field. It's disheartening to witness industries willing to innovate and prioritize community comfort getting sidelined.
We urge Camarillo’s City Council and Code-Compliance officers to take immediate action to enforce the existing noise laws. This includes regular inspections, strict penalties for violators, and support for businesses making efforts to comply with the law. It’s time we restored fairness and peace in our community.
Join us in calling on Camarillo to protect our health, our local businesses, and our serenity by finally enforcing the 55-decibel law. Please sign this petition and help us bring back the quiet bliss of our beautiful city.
