I stand as a concerned resident of the city of Euclid, Ohio, disheartened by the dilapidation and neglect I witness daily. Our community, rich with potential and promise, slowly succumbs to the blight of vacancy, becoming a haven for slumlords, squatters, and criminals. This unfortunate situation, born out of alleged lax policies, undeniably invites not prosperity but decay, compelling numerous individuals and businesses to relocate and forsake our city. The extent of this problem isn't just seen through the increasing number of vacated properties but felt in the spirit of the residents, as if being engulfed in a perpetual winter.
We sadly lack the momentum needed for enforcement of building codes and stricter regulations, which are pivotal to curbing this rampant issue. We are left to navigate amongst eroding structures, closing businesses, and escalating crime rates, a reality that calls for immediate attention and practical resolutions.
Therefore, we request that the city of Euclid, Ohio, starts enforcing building code violations more strictly. We ask for an increase in vacant property fees for commercial properties to 1% of the building's value annually, and 10% for residential properties starting by June of 2025. This policy reform serves not just as a punitive measure, but more importantly, as a deterrent for property owners to leave their estates vacant, creating an eyesore and a dangerous habitat.
Furthermore, we beseech the city to commence placing liens on home and commercial properties within a year after estimates are assembled to bring all rental properties up to date and "Turn Key Ready". It is time for the city administration to ignite the much-needed changes, encourage redevelopment, and warrant safer, healthier environments for its residents.
