Enforce ADA Compliance on Public Transportation Nationwide
The Issue
First let me say, Every day people with disabilities face challenges accessing public transportation, a vital lifeline for independence and opportunity. Especially, when your disability is invisible. My challenge and the challenge people without voices face when accessing public transportation.
I’ve seen and experienced enough. I’m not just a voice speaker but I’m also a voice for the voiceless.
Secondly, I want to thank every Bus Driver that has been there for all of us equally. Whether we are sick, poor, traveling, going to school, work, home, shopping, going out for the night whatever the reason for the service you have been there. Thank you for not passing me by leaving us in rain, heat, sleet or snow.
So many people are deliberately passed by or left at the bus stops for no lawful reason and then laughed at, mocked online by the same Public Servants that agreed to follow ADA Federal Law upon accepting the position after reading the job description and applying for position at their own will. I thank you so much.
I’ve been left several times deliberately and stranded with this mobility problem I have, so I can relate. Me being a Public Servant myself, I enjoyed Public transportation. But, I got injured. Again, thank you all.
What I’m about to share with you are just a couple of ADA Violations I’ve experienced, there is more, but I’ve been ignored, denied and gaslighted as a result of standing my ground and demanding justice, remedy and change.
On July 29th, while trying to board Bus Route 20, I requested accommodations that are rightfully mine under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The driver refused, forcing me to call a supervisor who finally provided the service I needed. Why does this keep happening? I have multiple complaints and have sent my complaints to Lisa Aulick via email and she has acquiesced to my request for evidence.
On March 24, 2026 A Metro Operator deliberately used his discretion to deny me access to public transport. His initial intentions were to leave me behind but, at the grace and love of another man who awaited the bus with me, yelled and waited as the bus driver closed the doors to leave. I rushed from underneath the bus shelter to the bus to board, requesting the (ramp, or kneel) he said “NO” this went to the point I attempted to physically climb on the bus out of the dark, cold night and found my right arm closed in the door. The Metro/Sorta operator manually shut my arm in the doors. No lawful reason for his actions. Just because he didn’t want me on his bus because I am unhoused but with a 24 hour metro ticket.
These incidents are not just personal—it’s systemic. Public transportation providers like METRO/SORTA continue to ignore ADA requirements, making it nearly impossible for many to travel freely and safely. When drivers choose not to kneel buses or offer ramps, they not only violate the ADA but also compromise the dignity and rights of individuals with mobility challenges. Ignoring these issues perpetuates inequality and exclusion.
Metro departments must prioritize accessibility and train personnel adequately to prevent problems like these. Supervisors should not be the only ones capable of resolving these situations; all staff must uphold ADA standards consistently. This is a national issue requiring federal commitment to enforce the ADA across all public transportation systems.
Transportation should not be a battle. We need legislation that ensures accountability for violators and supports regular ADA compliance audits on public transportation. Everyone deserves equal access to travel without fear or struggle.
