Petition updatePROTECT the Green Belt and Open Spaces in EnfieldA 21,000 Home New Town Put Forward by Enfield’s Labour Run Council

The Local elections on 7th May are not about what’s happening nationally, nor is it about party colours or allegiances — it is about what is happening on our doorstep and the future of Crews Hill, our countryside, and the character of Enfield for generations to come.

Yes, that’s right! If you haven’t heard, our very own Enfield Labour run Council has formally put forward the garden centres at Crews Hill and the countryside stretching from the M25 to Oakwood as the location for a vast 21,000-home New Town, which will decimate our much-cherished Green Belt, destroy the golden mile of horticultural businesses that define Crews Hill, and permanently change the character of our borough.

The government’s consultation, now live, sets out a vague boundary, so broad that it sweeps in Whitewebbs Park, Hilly Fields Park, Trent Country Park, Botany Bay Cricket Club, Southgate Hockey Club, Crews Hill Golf Club, Enfield Golf Club, Equestrian Centres with a loss of established businesses and hundreds of jobs.

This is not a small proposal. It is the largest Green Belt release ever suggested in Enfield’s history.

What residents can do now

There are two actions we encourage you to take:

1. Hold Labour run Enfield Council to account on 7th May.

This election will decide whether the New Town proceeds. Residents deserve councillors who will listen and defend our countryside, protect our heritage and landscapes, and develop in the right places - brownfield first, not Green Belt destruction. Please visit our website for unbiased insights about all the parties in Enfield, that could help you make an informed decision about your vote on 7th May.

2. Join our campaign to write to the Prime Minister.

Residents are urging the government to reject Enfield Council’s proposal for a New Town because it lacks evidence, transparency, and public support. The plan has been pushed forward by Enfield Council without scrutiny, without honesty, and without the involvement of the people who live here. You can send an email to the Prime Minister via our website. Please follow the instructions. Cut-off date midnight on May 8 for this part of the campaign.

Why residents are so concerned.

Enfield RoadWatch has always been a non‑party political community group. For more than a decade, residents have responded to consultations, submitted evidence, and demonstrated the value of the Green Belt. However, our voices as a community are not heard, the Council do not listen and continue to follow their own plans whatever we say. These are examples of Enfield Council’s track record:

  • Enfield as a borough is now over £3.2 billion in debt. with around £30 million a year spent on interest and repayments alone, which is money that could support services, parks, and communities.
  • The flag ship regeneration scheme known as Meridian Water, promises 10,000 homes. Site clearance started around 2015, however has only achieved around 300 homes in over 10 years. Now they want to start on the Green Belt!
  • Independent assessments show Enfield has enough brownfield capacity for at least 30,000 new homes, yet Enfield Council continues to target Green Belt instead. We acknowledge there is a housing crisis, but the solution is not building on the Green Belt. It needs to be the right homes in the right places.
  • In secret, the Council have worked with government officials, the Greater London Authority and developers on the New Town proposal. Residents only found out when it hit the national press.
  • Repeated attempts to obtain clarity have been met with avoidance, closed‑door decision‑making, and a refusal to release key documents. The Council have even declined to respond to requests from the Mayor of London.

A question every resident must consider:

Can a Council that operates in this way be trusted with another term in power?

We live here. We raise families here. We elect representatives to listen, to protect our environment, and to act in the public interest. Yet time and again, residents’ voices have been ignored.

You must vote! These are the most important elections in Enfield’s history. If we continue to have a Labour Council after 7th May, then unfortunately, we all know what we can look forward to!

Thank you for your continued support.
