Ending the Culture of Smart Shaming

Ending the Culture of Smart Shaming
The Issue
The current culture of intelligent shaming the institutionalized practice of ridiculing, dismissing, or silencing those who show intelligence, curiosity, or researched facts is a huge obstacle in the collective social and intellectual development of humanity. The knee-jerk of responding to something smart with a sarcastic remark or depreciation label such as the so-called know-it-all has become a defense mechanism in most contemporary social groups, classrooms, and online platforms, where conformity and agreement have been valued more than clarity. This is a chilling effect of the discourse when we punish people because they are articulate or knowledgeable we strengthen a social disease that makes ignorance a sign of authenticity, and critical thinking an indicator of a social malady. This process does not only hurt the person who is being ridiculed but it is an active contributor to the dissemination of false information as people grow up especially afraid to contradict the desires of the group they may think that they risk being shunned by society. Moreover, intelligent shaming discourages personal growth because it compels students and professionals to dumb down their input in order to fit in, in essence, limiting the potential of the smartest individuals of the generation. It is time we as a community promise to end this reflexive scorn and adopt the culture of actual inquiry and intellectual modesty. We need to make our societies the places where the search of the truth is glorified as a common good and not a personal vanity affair. We can develop a society where knowledge is not seen as a weapon of ego, but rather as a tool to enhance everyone by deciding to appreciate subtlety, respect professionalism, and support the free flow of ideas.
