However, this rich ecological tapestry is under threat due to the university’s continued use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides.
Rodenticides are designed to control rodent populations, but these chemical poisons have devastating ripple effects far beyond their intended targets. Predatory birds, such as hawks and owls, unwittingly consume poisoned rodents, leading to their own suffering and often lethal consequences. Studies have shown that secondary poisoning is a significant threat to these vital avian species, which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. According to the Audubon Society, nearly every bird of prey tested in certain study areas shows exposure to these toxic chemicals.
