End Unfair Towing Fees for Stolen Vehicle Victims

End Unfair Towing Fees for Stolen Vehicle Victims
The Issue
The Issue
Recently, my motorcycle was stolen and later recovered by law enforcement in Kleberg County-but instead of being notified, it was taken to a private wrecker yard, and I was told I must pay $400+ to get it back.
I never requested their services, yet I was told if I didn’t pay, they would legally take ownership of my stolen property.
When a vehicle is stolen and later recovered by law enforcement, the rightful owner should be able to reclaim their property without unnecessary financial burden. However, across Texas and the United States, wrecker companies are charging excessive fees to crime victims for non-consensual towing and storage. In many cases, if the victim cannot afford to pay, their vehicle is auctioned off—compounding their loss.
This practice is unethical, exploitative, and legally-sanctioned theft. Crime victims should not have to pay to recover what was wrongfully taken from them.
Our Call to Action
We urge policymakers to enact legislation that:
• Prohibits wrecker companies from charging crime victims for non-consensual tows.
• Requires law enforcement to notify vehicle owners before sending a stolen vehicle to storage.
• Implements consumer protections to prevent excessive storage fees and unfair auctions.
• Provides financial relief options for those unable to afford towing and storage costs.
How You Can Help
