The Issue

I never imagined one speeding ticket would lead to a ridiculous $250 payment, coupled with an unjust $130 penalty that labeled my vehicle as boot-worthy. It all started with a notice from the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) that shook me, and I'm sure many other residents, to the core. My name is Wanda Walker, and I refuse to stand idly by as the PPA turns speed enforcement into a money-making scheme.

On September 15th, I spoke at a PPA public hearing about my personal ordeal and the similar issues plaguing fellow Philadelphians. A regular day around 8th & Arch unveiled the reality: countless stories echoing mine, from unreasonable fines to vehicles being towed and lives being disrupted. Enough is enough. The PPA’s projected revenue of over a billion dollars by 2027, fueled by these speed traps, underscores a troubling priority shift—from ensuring public safety to filling coffers at the expense of hardworking citizens.

The city's recent decision to lower speed limits artificially creates these profit-driven traps. It's not about safer streets—it's about targeting innocent drivers, hoping mistakes will go unnoticed until they result in skyrocketing fines. We demand a fair process that doesn’t harshly punish minor infractions with inflated surcharges and severe consequences like booting.

Here are a few actionable steps needed for change:

1. **Reevaluate Speed Limits:** Conduct an independent review of newly lowered speed limits to ensure they align with actual traffic patterns and safety needs, rather than serving as bait for unsuspecting drivers.

2. **Transparent Fine Structures:** Implement clear and reasonable penalty schedules that reflect the seriousness of infractions without manipulating fees for revenue gain.

3. **Equitable Appeal Processes:** Establish straightforward and accessible channels for residents to contest fines without fear of punitive retaliation.

4. **Community Engagement:** Host regular public meetings where residents can voice their concerns and propose constructive solutions, guaranteeing accountability from the PPA.

Philadelphians deserve better than to be caught in a cycle of financial exploitation under the guise of traffic enforcement. Join me in calling for an end to this unjust hustle. Sign this petition to demand accountability and fairness from the PPA. Let's make Philadelphia’s streets a safe haven, not a financial pitfall.
