The Issue

Benue State has long been a vibrant and peaceful region, known for its rich culture and hard-working, hospitable people. However, recent conflicts have cast a shadow over this brightness. Violent clashes, predominantly between herders and farmers, have escalated to an unprecedented level, resulting in widespread loss of life, displacement of thousands, and massive devastation of property.

According to a report by Amnesty International, more than 1,500 deaths occurred due to herders in Nigeria from January to June 2018, with Benue State being the most affected region. Since 2018, the occurrences have multiplied every year, leading up to the murder of 100-200 in a single day on June 13, 2025.  If left unaddressed, these numbers will continue to rise, deepening the humanitarian crisis. It is time for us to stand up against this senseless killing.

We call upon the Nigerian government and international bodies to intervene urgently. By implementing comprehensive security measures and promoting peaceful dialogue between conflicting groups, we can restore peace to Benue State. Equally important is the accountability of perpetrators through rigorous investigative measures and ensuring justice for victims' families.

Humanitarian organizations must also be supported to provide necessary relief to displaced persons and those affected by this conflict. The international community has a role to play in assisting with resources and expertise to mediate and foster sustainable peace initiatives.

Every signature on this petition is a call for peace, a call for justice, and a reminder that human life is precious. Please sign this petition to urge our leaders to act now, and help Benue State reclaim its future.
