The Issue

As someone who works closely with horses, particularly rescue horses, I understand their sensitive nature and the therapeutic element they hold. Despite their massive size and incredible strength, these animals are not meant for large chaotic public events like Mardi Gras parades, no matter how trained they are. The overstimulating environments of these events are not natural to them and can cause undue stress.

Horses have a highly developed fight or flight instinct that makes them extremely sensitive to sudden changes in their environment (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). In a parade setting with loud noises, bright lights, and large crowds, this can lead to panic and potential injury.

Moreover, forcing horses into such situations is ethically questionable. It's important that we respect all creatures' rights to live without unnecessary distress or discomfort (Humane Society of the United States).

Mobile has a rich history with Mardi Gras parades dating back centuries. However, it's time we reassess our traditions in light of modern understanding about animal welfare. Let's work together to ensure our celebrations do not come at the expense of these magnificent creatures' wellbeing.

Please sign this petition urging Mobile city officials to end the use of horses in Mardi Gras parades. Let us show that we value both tradition and respect for all life forms equally.
