End the Undermining Label of "Lady Dragons" in Collierville

The Issue

As a proud member of the dragon community in Collierville, I am deeply concerned about the use of the phrase "Lady Dragons" to refer to our female athletes. It is time to address this issue and ensure that all dragons are treated equally and with respect.

I am a track runner and basketball player at West Collierville Middle School, and I enjoy both sports very much.  However, it has become increasingly disheartening to see how this label undermines and diminishes the accomplishments of our female athletes. By using "Lady Dragons," it implies that we are somehow second best or less important than our male athletes who are simply referred to as "dragons."

This labeling maintains harmful gender stereotypes by suggesting that being a lady dragon is not as prestigious or powerful as being a dragon. It sends a message that boys are the main dragons while girls are merely an afterthought. This distinction is unnecessary and unfair.

Some may argue that differentiating between genders helps identify teams during competitions. However, there are simple alternatives available such as referring to us as the girl basketball team or boy basketball team. This approach respects both genders without undermining anyone's identity.

It is essential for us to create an inclusive environment where all dragons feel valued and empowered regardless of their gender. By eliminating this unnecessary distinction, we can foster equality among all members of our community.

Let us come together as proud residents of Collierville and demand change! Sign this petition if you believe it is time for our school district and community leaders to end the use of "Lady Dragons" when referring to female athletes.

Together, we can make a difference by promoting inclusivity within our beloved town's sports programs. Join me in urging school officials and decision-makers in Collierville School District to eliminate this outdated label once and for all!

Thank you for your support in making Collierville a place where all dragons are treated equally and with the respect they deserve.
