End the Total Phone Ban in South Carolina Schools

End the Total Phone Ban in South Carolina Schools

The Issue

This petition was born out of a personal concern. Many of us, as part of the school community, are navigating the challenges of mental health conditions including ADHD, autism, and more. The total phone ban in South Carolina schools is causing an undue burden on our ability to cope and function, leaving us feeling isolated and unsupported in a space where we need understanding the most.

Schools are meant to be safe spaces that foster growth and learning. However, when students with mental health needs are cut off from a possible lifeline - their phones, we create an environment of anxiety and control rather than support. The ability to quickly inform a parent or trusted adult during a moment of crisis should not be restricted; it is a basic need, not a privilege.

Not only should phones be allowed in certain spaces outside the classroom like cafeterias and hallways, but the punitive approach towards violations should be lessened. Instead of referrals, we propose warnings should be given. This balanced approach respects both the need for order in schools and students' fundamental need to connect with their support networks.

We are not asking for unrestricted use of phones in classrooms, but a reasonable and humane approach to phone use in schools. This is a call to the decision-makers in South Carolina to end the stringent phone ban and start a conversation on revising these policies. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
