I've been aiding a homeless woman in our community who obtained a dog from our local shelter. Tragically, despite her best intentions, she keeps the dog tied up outside all day, without proper shelter, in the harsh cold. As if that wasn’t enough, food and water are often nowhere to be found, leaving the dog vulnerable and distressed.

This heart-breaking situation isn't unique. Many animals suffer due to similar circumstances across our city. When individuals, regardless of their financial status, adopt pets, they must adhere to basic care laws. For instance, our city has a tethering law designed to protect animals, and yet, it's frequently ignored.

Animals deserve love, a safe haven, regular meals, and warmth. It is our responsibility as a community to make sure these humane expectations are met for all pets, not just those in privileged households.

We must hold our local shelters accountable, ensuring they conduct thorough checks and provide necessary education before approving adoptions. Furthermore, shelters should offer post-adoption support and resources, especially to those in financially unstable situations.

We urge our local government to enforce existing tethering laws and introduce stricter policies regulating animal welfare. By establishing regular check-ins and penalties for breaches, we can deter negligent behavior.
