End the Soulless Bureaucracy: Rename the North East CA to Earldom of Northumbria

End the Soulless Bureaucracy: Rename the North East CA to Earldom of Northumbria
The Issue
The Problem: A Nameless Bureaucracy
We live in one of the most historic regions in the world, yet we are currently governed by a "bureaucratic container." The North East Mayoral Combined Authority is a clunky, administrative label. It is a direction, not a place.
Worse still, the title "Mayor" frames our regional leader as a mere administrator of government grants—a middle manager of a system, rather than a leader of a territory.
The Solution: A Historic Opportunity
We call on Mayor Kim McGuinness and the Cabinet to use their specific powers under Section 76 of the Levelling-up and Regeneration Act 2023 to formally rename the authority. This law gives them the right to choose a title that reflects our local history.
We demand that the Authority:
- Reclaim the Identity: Rename the region the Modern Earldom of Northumbria. This accurately reflects the "Tweed-to-Tees" geography of our seven councils.
- Upgrade the Leadership: Adopt the title Governor of the Earldom.
- End the Confusion: Stop using the vague "North East" label, which inaccurately claims to represent the Tees Valley (who have their own Mayor).
Why this matters:
- Global Status: In the US, Australia, and Europe, "Governors" lead territories. "Mayors" run towns. To get world-class investment, we need a world-class title.
- Regional Pride: "The North East" is a box on a spreadsheet. "Northumbria" is a home with 1,000 years of history.
- Ambition: We don't want an administrator who manages a container. We want a Governor who leads a people.
The law allows it. Our history demands it. All that is missing is the political will.
Sign this petition to tell the Mayor: Don't just administer the North East. Lead Northumbria.
