End the social media ban for under 16s in Australia

The issue

In Australia, teenagers are being asked to navigate a world that demands maturity at an earlier age. We are expected to make serious life choices, such as finding a job at 15, yet we are restricted when it comes to accessing social media until we are 16. This seems  pretty weird to me. Imagine telling a wolf to suddenly adapt from a lush forest to a harsh snow-covered terrain and expecting it to thrive seamlessly, but would it survive? Would it be 'okay?' This is what the sudden enforcement of the social media ban feels like to us.

Social media is not just a platform for entertainment; it is a vital tool for communication, education, and socialisation. Without it, we risk isolation from the digital community that our peers in other countries are part of.

More effective than a ban would be implementing educational programs to teach young people about responsible social media use.

Rather than an absolute ban, let us set reasonable restrictions that safeguard mental health while fostering an environment where teens can grow safely and responsibly in the digital world. Some Policies could include setting screen time limits, implementing parental controls, and providing educational resources.

Please join us in urging the Australian government to re-evaluate this policy and focus on educating young people in digital literacy rather than preventing them from participating in the digital age. This is the Modern World, The 2000s, not the 1900s. Please sign our petition to lift the social media ban for under 16s.
