END THE SILENCE. PROTECT WOMEN. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY.
The Issue
In the past two months, the bodies of eight women have been discovered across the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, including areas like Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, Olifantsfontein, Clayville, and KwaThema. These devastating discoveries have left families shattered and our communities living in constant fear.
Among the victims is 38-year-old Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, a mother who vanished after simply leaving her home for an afternoon jog, only for her partially clothed body to be found behind a hotel days later. Other victims have been discovered near the R21 highway and local streams, many stripped naked, sexually assaulted, or bound with cable ties. The numbers continue to rise.
Instead of an immediate, overwhelming structural response, women are repeatedly told by officials to "be extra vigilant"—effectively forcing us to carry the responsibility for our own survival while perpetrators walk free. We refuse to accept that our safety is entirely our own concern while the state fails to protect us. Violence against women is a national crisis, and it requires a systemic solution, not empty advice.
We as South African women will not stand for the ongoing slaughter and abuse of our sisters, our communities, and our children! We refuse to let our children grow up in terror, and we refuse to stay silent while women are hunted and killed.
We, the undersigned, demand urgent, aggressive government action to protect women, dismantle the root causes of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and ensure perpetrators face absolute justice.
This cannot be treated as business as usual!
We are not asking for another superficial statement of concern or a toothless public campaign. We are raising our voices to demand systematic accountability from a failed system.
