End the Senseless Isolation of Patients and Families

End the Senseless Isolation of Patients and Families
The Issue
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. healthcare system exposed a devastating failure: patients were forced to endure illness, procedures, and even death in isolation.
- Mothers gave birth alone.
- Children were separated from their parents.
- Elderly residents slipped into depression, cut off from loved ones.
- Hospitalized patients were denied an advocate — even when both tested negative for COVID.
- Countless thousands died without a hand to hold or a voice of comfort.
This is not right. It is not humane. And it cannot be allowed to happen again.
Patients need loved ones by their side — for emotional support, for healing, and for advocacy. A family member is a second set of eyes and ears, often catching details when a patient cannot. To strip this away is not “safety.” It’s cruelty.
Yes, we must protect healthcare workers and other patients. But protection and presence can exist together. The truth is, by and large, the American healthcare system failed to strike that balance.
We demand comprehensive legislation to ensure:
Emergency preparedness — every state must maintain PPE stockpiles so hospitals are never left scrambling.
Patient rights — every patient must have the guaranteed right to one screened visitor/advocate per day, without arbitrary time limits, in every circumstance — even during a pandemic.
This is about dignity. It’s about compassion. It’s about basic human rights.
Join us in saying: Never sick alone. Never recover alone. Never give birth alone. Never die alone.
