End the Second-Class Service on the Epping Branch and End the "Loughton Gap"

End the Second-Class Service on the Epping Branch and End the "Loughton Gap"
The Issue
PETITION: End the Second-Class Service on the Epping Branch
To: The Mayor of London, Transport for London (TfL), and the Commissioner for Transport.
For months, commuters in Epping, Theydon Bois, and Debden have been treated as an afterthought. What should be a direct journey has devolved into a daily ordeal of "shuttle" transfers, freezing platforms, and moving goalposts. We are paying full fare for a half-measured service.
The current "Loughton Gap" is not merely an inconvenience; it is a systemic failure. Passengers are being forced off trains at Loughton, only to watch Epping-bound services be cancelled or rerouted in real-time. This lack of reliability is stalling our local economy, impacting our mental health, and making the daily commute a source of constant stress.
Our Demands for Immediate Action:
• End the "Loughton Gap": We demand an immediate end to the routine termination of services at Loughton. Epping-bound passengers must not be sidelined to accommodate "shorter loops" for operational convenience.
• Stop In-Transit Rerouting: TfL must cease the practice of changing train destinations once they have left London. Passengers boarding an Epping train should arrive at Epping on that same train.
• Fair Allocation of Refurbished Fleet: The Epping branch—the longest and most breakdown-prone stretch of the line—must be prioritised for the rollout of refurbished Central Line Improvement Programme (CLIP) trains.
• Transparent Real-Time Communication: No more "ghost trains" or silent delays. We demand honest, real-time explanations for service gaps and an end to the "shuttle" system that leaves passengers stranded on cold platforms.
• Automatic Compensation: Until a full, direct, and reliable timetable is restored, TfL must implement a simplified, one-click refund system for all Epping branch users affected by these disruptions.
Why This Matters Now
Demand has outpaced service. While passenger numbers have surged, our infrastructure has crumbled. We are not asking for special treatment; we are asking for the service we pay for. A reliable Central Line is the economic heartbeat of Epping Forest. Without urgent intervention and investment, the vitality of our community is at risk.
