End the Practice of Killing Surplus Animals in Zoos

The Issue

I am writing this petition out of deep concern and personal distress over a practice that is both inhumane and wrong - the killing of surplus animals by zoos. This issue is not just close to my heart, but it also raises serious ethical questions about our treatment of animals.

Zoos are supposed to be sanctuaries for animals, places where they can live safely while educating the public about wildlife conservation. However, some zoos have been found to euthanize their "surplus" or "extra" animals - those that do not fit into their breeding programs or are deemed non-essential for educational purposes.

According to a report by Born Free USA, between 3,000 and 5,000 healthy zoo animals are killed each year in Europe alone (Born Free USA). This includes young and healthy individuals who could have lived long lives if given the chance. It's a shocking statistic that reveals an ugly side of an institution we often associate with care and conservation.

This practice not only goes against animal welfare principles but also undermines the very purpose of zoos as conservators of wildlife. We need your help to bring this issue into light and demand change from these institutions.

It's time we hold zoos accountable for their actions. Let us urge them to find humane alternatives such as transferring surplus animals to other zoos or sanctuaries instead of resorting to euthanasia. Together we can make a difference.

Please sign this petition today and join us in standing up against this cruel practice.
