A plea from the heart of someone who believes, as many of us do, that every animal has a fundamental right to live, a right not dissimilar to our own. The thought of ending a life, the life of an animal that could otherwise live long and prosper, is deeply disturbing and disheartening. These animals have families; they play an integral role in our ecosystem, and deserve to roam our planet freely, living a long, fulfilling life.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in kill shelters, places that are supposedly designed to 'help' animals, yet are responsible for unjustly ending lives to make room for more animals. In the United States alone, an estimated 1.5 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

It's inconceivable to think that in a world where space isn't the issue, the transient lack of temporary homes leads to such drastic measures. Many troubles faced by shelters are due to the disconnect between the number of pets taken in versus the amount adopted out.

This petition advocates for the end of kill shelters and urges the implementation of more constructive solutions like high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter programs, TNR (trap-neuter-return) programs for feral cats, and improved adoption promotions.
