Every month, I find myself in a predicament. I visit the pharmacy with the hope of filling my estradiol patch prescription, only to be met with the disappointing news that it's unavailable. This recurring issue affects not just me, but countless other women across the nation who rely on these patches to manage menopausal symptoms. While the patches are crucial for alleviating hot flashes, ensuring a good night's sleep, and preserving bone density, estrogen isn't just a reproductive hormone, it's a whole-body hormone. It helps protect a woman's heart, bones, brain, skin, muscles, and blood vessels, so replacing it after menopause can restore many of the protective effects lost when estrogen levels decline.

The sharp rise in heart disease after menopause is no coincidence. As estrogen levels fall, blood vessels become less resilient and cardiovascular risk increases. For healthy women who begin hormone therapy within about 10 years of menopause, estrogen can help preserve vascular health and may lower the risk of future heart disease.  Additionally, menopause can cause disrupted sleep, brain fog, and waves of intense heat that significantly impact daily life. These symptoms can be debilitating, affecting our personal and professional lives to a great extent. Estradiol patches offer a lifeline, helping women regain control and lead active, fulfilling lives. 

The ongoing shortage of these patches seems to have no end and, most concerningly, no clear explanation. As patients, we deserve transparency and consistency in our healthcare options. This shortage is not just an inconvenience; it has a direct adverse effect on the well-being of millions of women.

We call upon pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and policy-makers to prioritize the production and distribution of estradiol patches. We urge them to investigate the reasons behind this shortage, communicate transparently with patients, and develop a robust strategy to ensure this essential medication is consistently available.

It is imperative that action is taken swiftly to resolve this shortage. We should not have to struggle to receive basic healthcare necessities that empower us to live with dignity and health.
