From a personal perspective, the cost of implementing food waste and recycling programs can be detrimental to the financial health of many businesses. Recognizing the environmental benefits of recycling, we should also consider the financial strain that it puts on businesses. Current laws and regulations impose mandatory recycling in businesses across all sectors, regardless of their economic capacity. According to research, the annual recycling expense for a typical business can range into several thousand pounds (Source: Environmental Research & Education Foundation, 2019). We believe that, while having an effective waste management system is essential for the environment, imposing this cost broadly without considering the financial capabilities of each business can hinder their growth and success. Therefore, we call upon lawmakers to review these regulations and come up with a more sustainable and financially-friendly solution. In addition, we request the development of incentives and support programs to aid businesses in incorporating recycling systems into their operations without causing significant financial distress.
