End the Involvement of Horses in Mardi Gras Parades

The Issue

I have been deeply disturbed for years, witnessing horses endure the chaos of Mardi Gras parades. A recent incident at the year's first parade left me heartbroken and compelled to take action. A horse was on the ground, clearly suffering. Despite its distress, it was kicked repeatedly by its handler and forced to stand while a large man remained on its back.

Horses are sensitive creatures that should not be subjected to such harsh conditions. The noise, crowds, and general mayhem of these events can cause significant stress for these animals. It is shocking that no serious injuries or accidents have occurred yet given these circumstances - but if they do occur, it will inevitably be the horses who are blamed.

The American Veterinary Medical Association states that "horses should not be exposed to situations likely to induce panic or escape behavior." (AVMA Guidelines for Responsible Pet Ownership). Yet this is precisely what happens during Mardi Gras parades in Mobile.

We need your help to put an end to this cruel practice. We must protect our equine friends from unnecessary harm and stress caused by their participation in such events. Let us remember Maya Angelou's words: “When we know better, we do better.” It's time we did better by our horses.

Please sign this petition urging city officials in Mobile, AL to discontinue the use of horses in Mardi Gras parades.
