End the Grade Schoolers leading the pledge in USD240
The Issue
Every morning, millions of children recite the Pledge of Allegiance in grade schools across the United States. While this practice is deeply ingrained in our educational system, it should be held to a higher standard, including kids not reciting it extremely slowly and sounding like zombies.
For me personally, hearing the Pledge recited slowly every day has become unbearable. This ritual is often executed at a sluggish pace, which is far from optimal for maintaining a low cortisol level—a key hormone related to stress. Cortisol plays a vital role in maintaining mental health, and elevated levels can contribute to stress and anxiety in children.
There’s also a matter of basic respect. The Pledge of Allegiance isn’t just a morning routine — it’s a tribute to this country and to every soldier, sailor, and veteran who has bled for it. These are people who gave up time with their families, their health, and in many cases their lives, so that we could have the freedom to send our kids to school every morning. The least we can do is mean it when we say the words. A slow, droning recitation doesn’t honor anyone. It teaches kids that the Pledge is just something you get through before the school day starts. That’s not a lesson any of us should be okay with.
Numerous studies have shown that reducing stress in school environments can greatly improve students' cognitive functions and overall well-being. In a time where mental health is increasingly recognized as pivotal to educational success, we must question traditions that may be contributing to stress, however subtly.
Please sign this petition to advocate for a change in our educational system and support the mental well-being of our children. Together, we can cultivate a learning environment that truly supports the needs and health of our future generations.
