End the dementia tax

End the dementia tax
The Issue
Many families affected by dementia are having to pay extra for care – this is unfair and needs to change.
We are calling for changes to VAT to ensure families affected by dementia can afford the care they need.
Did you know that not-for-profit Community Interest Companies (CICs) have to charge 20% VAT on the vital day care they provide?
One such not-for-profit organisation is The Filo Project which supports people living with dementia in the community. Since 2014, it has supported over 3,000 people and has provided vital and extended respite for thousands of families and unpaid carers. They operate in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and East Lancashire.
The additional cost burden of VAT on families supported by The Filo Project means that many are unable to afford as much care as they need.
Since 2014 families supported by The Filo Project have paid over £450,000 in VAT on their day care. If the VAT is removed, families would be able to afford more days’ care and feel the benefit of the VAT removal immediately. You can help these families.
We want to see the VAT rules changed so that not-for-profit organisations providing welfare support and care are exempt from VAT.
Help us tell the Treasury to change the VAT rules and end the dementia tax.
