End the cruelty at Appleby Horse Fair

End the cruelty at Appleby Horse Fair
The Issue
I remember the days when I kept six ponies, each one of them treated with love and respect. The thought of ever hurting them was unimaginable to me, yet every year I witness the heart-wrenching reality at the Appleby Horse Fair. It's an annual event in June, where thousands gather, often unaware of or indifferent to the suffering these animals endure.
The Appleby Horse Fair is renowned as a vibrant cultural event, yet beneath its colorful facade lies immense cruelty. Innocent horses and ponies are driven to exhaustion, trotting at high speed up and down the flash lane, simply to showcase their speed to onlookers. The sight of these animals drenched in sweat, only to be roughly bathed in the river, is haunting. This ritualistic washing is not an act of care, but rather a deceitful attempt to mask the sweat and fatigue their bodies bear. They are rarely given adequate rest or water, treated as mere tools rather than the compassionate beings they are.
The streets, closed off to vehicles, turn into bustling markets where horses and ponies are traded with little regard for their well-being. The handling is shockingly rough, devoid of any compassion or care. What we see is not the celebration of a cultural heritage but the blatant exploitation of these gentle creatures.
It is 2026, and it is time for us to rise against this callousness. No being should endure such treatment under the guise of tradition. The world has evolved, and so must our practices. We must put an end to this excessive cruelty that accompanies the Appleby Horse Fair.
By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against the harsh treatment of horses and ponies at the Appleby Horse Fair. Demand change, demand compassion, and ask for policies that ensure the ethical treatment of all animals at this event. Let us ensure that no more sweat, fear, or pain marks these majestic animals. Stand with me and let’s bring dignity and humanity back to these events. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard for the voiceless.
