The Issue
We are deeply concerned about the inhumane treatment of dogs and cats in the Philippines, where they are often cruelly captured and slaughtered for their meat. This barbaric practice not only violates the basic rights of these animals but also poses a serious threat to public health.
Dogs and cats are cherished companions, loyal friends, and beloved members of countless Filipino families. They bring joy, comfort, and unconditional love to our lives. Yet, in some parts of the country, these animals are treated as mere commodities, subjected to unimaginable cruelty and suffering.
While the Philippine government has banned the trade and consumption of dog and cat meat, this cruel practice persists in many provinces, including Tarlac. This is not just a distant problem; it is a reality we face in our own communities.
I, Marianne, witnessed firsthand the horrific cruelty inflicted upon a dog in my own neighborhood. A neighbor sold their dog to a group of men who then tied ropes around its legs and neck and hung it from a tree until it suffocated to death. They then cleaned and cooked the animal, consuming it while drinking alcohol.
We call upon the Philippine government to:
- Increase enforcement of existing laws against animal cruelty, particularly in areas where the trade persists.
- Implement stricter penalties for those involved in the capture, slaughter, and consumption of dogs and cats.
- Provide greater support to local animal welfare organizations working to rescue and rehabilitate abused animals.
- Launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate Filipinos about the ethical and health risks associated with consuming dog and cat meat.
We believe that all animals deserve to be treated with compassion and respect. We urge you to join us in demanding an end to this cruel and inhumane practice.
