End The Censorship And Edits In Dubs Of The Yugioh Series!

The Issue

Yugioh started off as a 38 volume manga written by Kazuki Takahashi. It's main idea in the first 7 volumes was that a boy named Yugi, who's always getting picked on, solves an ancient Egyptian Puzzle called the Millennium Puzzle that gets him possessed by an ancient Pharoh. This Pharoh challenges criminals and bullies alike, to shadow games, magical games where the loser can die or get a mental illness, to the point where one of Yugi's victims is a criminal who gets lit on fire and dies.

One of these shadow games revolved around a card game called duel monsters, one of the most famous aspects of Yugioh that fans are familiar with. This card game was so popular that fans demanded Kazuki Takahashi to feature it more, so after the first 7 volumes the story revolved around it.

2 anime were made that are based on the manga, the first one was never dubbed and was 27 episodes long, plus solely based on the first 7 volumes, while the second one repeated some events in the first 7 volumes if they were related to duel monsters or just important to the story, but skipped the majority of them because the second anime was made mainly to sell the card game. The second one ultimately was 224 episodes and based on all 38 volumes of the manga. Both anime had minor story changes and were toned down in violence compared to the manga, regardless they were still very mature, with the second anime having a few pretty bloody scenes. This maturity is also kept in the spinoff Yugioh shows, though not as extreme.

Either way it's clear Yugioh is not meant for little kids, it is a series clearly aimed at 13 year olds and above, though there's one problem. All the rights of the show's dub were sold to 4kids Entertainment, now known as 4K Media Inc. They are known for censoring and editing anime to extreme measures, to the point it's always suitable for 7 year olds and maybe even below. So that's what they did with Yugioh, here are the following known edits they have done to its dub:

- The original soundtrack has been replaced.
- Any violence, even a simple fistfight is removed.
- Every drop of blood is removed.
- Anything too emotional is removed, including something as simple as being an orphan, or a friend turning on another friend.
- Dialogue is heavily censored with added catch phrases, plus emotional and character developing lines are replaced with duel monster related lines.
- Any reference to death is removed, including removing deaths and making stuff up like the shadow realm, and going as extreme as to take out a light that covers a city since it might simply spark a small image everyone's gonna die.
- Weapons such as guns are removed, and holding a gun can be replaced with just pointing a finger.
- Drugs are removed.
- Sexual content is edited and even when it's innocent skirts are made longer and cleavage is edited.
- Any text is removed instead of translating japenese text or keeping English text.
- American names are given and they make viewers think it takes place in America, and plot edits are frequent.
- Any consumerism is removed.

Even for 7 year olds, you could probably make an argument those edits are pretty extreme, and it's still being done to the show. I think it's time to end this censorship, especially since a new upcoming Yugioh movie coming out, known as "Yugioh: The Dark Side Of Dimmensions" is being described as the darkest Yugioh ever in anime form, which makes a little sense since it's canon to the manga. Of course though there's already signs it's dub will be edited.

The English trailer uses the dub soundtrack, has the dub only catch phrase, "It's time to duel" and even though it takes place after the manga, the dub version is apparently taking place after the anime. The only reason for this change must be that 4K Media is afraid of it's target audience, younger kids from reading the manga to understand the story, since unlike the anime, the manga which has been translated by Viz Media is left almost fully unchanged. So more people reading it would expose more people to Yugioh's dark side, which could potentially lead to more people wanting an uncut dub.

I think everyone believes Yugioh should start being dubbed in an uncut format, with the following left intact from the Japenese version:

- The dialogue should stay as true to the original as possible.
- The footage should be left unchanged.
- The original soundtrack should stay intact, or at least the songs can have their lyrics dubbed into English but must stay as true to the original as possible in terms of the meaning.

I call for any future dubs made for the Yugioh series to be dubbed this way, and for the entire series to be redubbed like this from the very beginning. And for anyone wondering, here's a comparison of some of the best Yugioh scenes and their dub versions: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByU1EVe2qM0wcUNCZ0Z0bDViSlk/view?usp=sharing

Also it should be noted besides the edits in the dub, the dub has also skipped numerous episodes, including entire seasons.
