Having devoted years to researching and advocating for animal rights, and as the author of a book shedding light on these issues, it is hard for me to ignore the horrifying conditions pigs and piglets face daily in factory farms. It’s disheartening to witness how animals that share emotions and social bonds similar to our pets are forced to endure a life of suffering.

In many factory farming operations, mother pigs are confined in gestation crates barely bigger than their own bodies. These cages prevent them from even turning around, severely compromising their physical and mental well-being. It's akin to spending your life in an airplane seat, enduring intense physical and psychological stress.

Piglets, fresh into this world and expected to grow merely as products, face unimaginable cruelty. Some are ignored altogether or subjected to brutal practices like 'thumping'—a practice that sees piglets slammed against hard surfaces to be euthanized. The life of a pig in such conditions is bleak and deserves far more consideration than what is currently given.

This abuse goes unchecked, not because of lack of awareness but because these animals are afforded so few protections under law. In many parts of the world, including the very heartlands of industrial farming, pigs are not protected by robust animal welfare laws. Their misery is a stark reminder of how our agricultural systems prioritize production efficiency over ethical treatment.

There is a dire need for reform in legislative policies to ensure better conditions for these animals. Implementing stronger welfare standards, abolishing the use of gestation crates, and ending horrific practices like piglet thumping are steps that can and should be taken immediately.

We need to push lawmakers to recognize pigs as sentient beings deserving of basic rights, ensure their humane treatment, and bring about fair and compassionate practices in farming. By doing so, we honor the ethical responsibility we have towards these animals.
