The Issue

My loved one is trapped inside a system that is failing its most fundamental duty: to rehabilitate and protect. Every day, they live in constant fear for their life within the confines of Whiteville Correctional Facility, a prison operated by CoreCivic under a contract with the state of Tennessee. This facility has been the epicenter of numerous allegations related to safety, mismanagement, and neglect, putting the lives of inmates at risk and failing to uphold the basic human rights they deserve.

CoreCivic, a for-profit corporation, manages Whiteville prison which has been associated with understaffing, inadequate healthcare, violence, and poor living conditions. According to various investigative reports and testimonies, the conditions in Whiteville prison do not meet the standards necessary for a safe and rehabilitative environment. If these conditions persist, the cycle of fear and neglect will continue, affecting not only those incarcerated but also their families and communities.

CoreCivic has a troubling history of prioritizing profit over people, and it is time that we address this significant issue directly. Ending Tennessee’s contract with CoreCivic is a concrete and actionable solution to closing Whiteville prison, ensuring the safety and dignity of those who are currently incarcerated there, and preventing further suffering.

The state of Tennessee must prioritize human rights and criminal justice reform. By severing ties with CoreCivic, Tennessee can take a bold step forward in ensuring that its prison system remains accountable and focused on true rehabilitation.

Governor Bill Lee, we implore you to take immediate action. Do not renew the contract with CoreCivic and take decisive steps to close Whiteville prison. It's time to put human lives and dignity above corporate profit. Sign this petition to support the safety and rights of the inmates and to bring about meaningful reform to the prison system in Tennessee. Your signature will amplify our voices and help safeguard the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves.
