End Tax Write-offs for Canceling 3D Screenings and Mandate Release of 3D Masters

The Issue

As a passionate fan of the unique artistry and cinematic breadth that 3D movies bring to viewers, I am distressed by the current situation these phenomenal works find themselves in. The 2017 Tax Bill created a loophole allowing corporations to cancel 3D screenings and obtain tax write-offs, a situation that not only impacts the profitability and sustainability of 3D cinema, but deprives the public of enjoying these amazing creations. Remarkable 3D masterpieces like Mitchell's VS the Machines, Bullet Train, Uncharted, Infinite, Rumble, Top Gun Maverick, Haunted Mansion (2023), Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken (which has both a Native 3D and separate post-conversion 3D Master), Mortal Kombat (2021), The King's Daughter (2022), Scoob, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The King's Man, Artemis Fowl, The Addam Family 2, Dog Man, The Tomorrow War, Mission Imposssible Dead Reckoning, Paranormal Activity Next to Kin, The Batman (2022) among many many others are being hidden from the public due to this policy.

Tax incentives and legislation should promote diversity in film formats, not restrict them. According to the Motion Picture Association, the film industry contributes over $130 billion annually to the US economy. A large part of this success is the variety of cinematic experiences, including 3D films, available to the public. Top Gun Maverick would have made $2 billion if it had released in 3D screenings. The movie studios are costing America to have less jobs and economy just for some lousy tax write-offs. We need to protect this diversity to ensure the continued artistic and economic vitality of our film industry.

We call on lawmakers to eliminate tax benefits for studios cancelling 3D screenings and mandate the release of 3D masters for previously 2D only releases. Please stand with us in protecting the art of 3D cinema and ensuring the public can fully experience these beautiful films. Sign this petition to preserve the magic and artistry of 3D movies.
