Adriana Love started this petition to Publix Super Markets

Lately I’ve noticed a trend in the Publix grocery store chain selling Black Tip Reef Shark in their deli department.  This particular species is IUCN listed as vulnerable to depletion and in decline. By removing sharks from Florida waters, we are endangering the eco systems that serve as our most important protection against storms - our already damaged coral reefs.

Sharks are the apex predators who keep fish stocks maintained and healthy. In order to keep our coasts strong and our fish stocks manageable, the sharks must be left to survive. They can’t do that as a steak in a meat counter selling for $5.69 per pound.

Additionally the meat spoils quickly - smelling like ammonia when it does. Sharks urinate through their skin hence the ammonia scent and flavor given off when the meat goes bad. The shelf life isn’t worth the small profit the product can bring.

Black tip reef sharks are small and limited in “commercial value”. They are utilized as part of the shark fin market and for their meat and liver oil, however they are also sought out in the eco tourism market where their continued presence is a constant source of revinue for our state. Their presence can only benefit Florida when their migration pattern brings them to our coast.

I implore Publix - please don’t sell this product. Please put our coasts and coral reefs first and take a stand against a market that stands to deplete the shark population we need for a healthy ecosystem.
